This generation we're raising needs to find a connection to nature to help them grow into the power they will need to survive this world.
The amount of time that our children are spending on technological devices is destroying their ability to function as capable, compassionate, emotionally intelligent beings in society.
No app, game or any programme will ever help them feel as confident, clear thinking and calm as going out climbing trees, rolling around on the grass or playing in the rain.
My eldest spent the day with me, his cousin and 3 younger sibling walking, talking, exploring... and for the most part of the day trying to solve a rubix cube (which he did in the end!). We came across this tree, and being the child he is, up he went!
The look of calm and pure bliss in this picture just helps confirm in my mind all of what I said above. I don't need to see the science behind it (although there is more than enough to back up and support it), we have the feelings.
Our feelings are determined by thought, if they live in constantly distracted lives when do they have time to just be in their own heads, controlling whats going on up there?
Lets stop worrying about our children being bored, take the devices away (at least for a while) let them have a tantrum and get all that anger out... and when they calm down put on the shoes and coat and head out. Forget what they want to do and remember what you need to do.
It's not easy to turn down half an hour of silence when you've still got that pile of washing in the sink, not to mention the clothes, floors to clear, beds to change and whatever else that comes with parenting... I know!
But I promise, it's not always going to be that way, however those half an hour adventures (that may turn into whole days of magical memories) where you walk away from the chaos and find freedom in the nature around will build a stronger child.
Peace of mind comes when they find peace within. Take responsibility until they can take it themselves.
